Blogging is great on multiple levels. Personally, it can help you grow as a person and for businesses, it can help you stay relevant. Here at Thirsty Concepts, we publish a blog post once a week for our “Thirsty Thursdays” series. It may seem easy enough but it takes quite a bit of work to produce content every single week but we do it because we like engaging with our audience and it is a great way to promote our business and ideas. So here are a few tips to help you get started.
The most important thing, even more important than having good content, is to be consistent. You want to release content often because it will keep your readers coming back for more. It doesn’t matter if you blog once a week or five times a week, you need a set schedule. You don’t want to spend weeks working on a single post and then stay dormant for two months leaving your customers wondering when you are going to blog again. Or worst yet, forget about you and your blog all together.
DON’T DRIVE YOURSELF CRAZY.
Like I said before, writing a blog isn’t easy but it will get easier and easier the more you do it because you’ll have a set routine down. For example, when I start a blog post, I will do some research to see what others are saying about the topic and then I will make an outline. From there, I will start to type out the post and then go back and edit it. You will get frustrated from time to time trying to write but the key thing is to take a deep breathe and move on if you have to. Either come back to it later or start on another topic entirely.
KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE.
Each blog post should have something your readers can learn from and take away. It could be tips on blogging or an interesting article in your field. You don’t want to write about how important it is to have a social media manager when your blog is about cars. That will just tune your readers out and drive them away.
DON’T GET DISCOURAGED.
Unless you are a celebrity, your blog will not get millions of page views. That’s the honest truth. However, if you keep at it, more and more people will start coming to your blog especially if you are consistently creating great content. It will definitely take time but don’t give up.
ALWAYS BE LOOKING OUT FOR NEW TOPICS.
This will help you come up with different things to blog about week after week. I have a “swype” notebook on Evernote where I save articles I think are interesting and jot down ideas for future blog posts. Also, each post doesn’t have to be about the same thing. Mix it up to keep things fresh. Conduct interviews with industry leaders, invite guest bloggers, share interesting links, or even solve a particular problem. The options are limitless.
DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE TITLE.
Having a good title is just as important as writing the blog post itself. You don’t want to write an interesting post and not have a catchy enough title that will grab reader’s attention and make them click on it. We recently posted a few tips on how to come up with a good title for your blog.
The last tip is simple, just be honest. Don’t make stats up just to support your idea or business. Readers will be able to sniff out the lies right away and discredit your work.
Hopefully, these tips will help you get started on your blog or if you already have one, make you a little better at it. We try our best to help others out however we can so if you have any ideas, tips, or questions, talk to us on Twitter. Other than that, we will see you next Thursday.
